With wins at 168 golf tournaments, the coveted career Grand Slam on the Regular and Senior Tours, more than $64 million raised for charities worldwide, more than 400 golf course designs to his name, 28 million air kilometers traveled and 82 years behind him, golf legend Gary Player still finds time to make fitness a priority.
It was that fitness, along with the signature philanthropy that has made the Gary Player Invitational the world’s leading charity golf series, that was on display at the first event of the 2018 global series, held recently in Abu Dhabi at the award-winning Saadiyat Beach Golf Club.
Held in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, under the Patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, and taking place on Monday, 29 January, the 2018 Gary Player Invitational saw golf professionals, celebrities and business leaders join tournament host and sport icon Gary Player for the annual event.
With more than 238,733 AED raised for local event beneficiary, the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, and with a fun-filled day of action on the green, another challenge of sorts played out on the pristine beaches of Saadiyat Island. Inspired by Gary Player’s rigorous fitness routine, which includes 1000 crunches, one-legged squats and sprints, golf’s next generation of champions were asked just how fit they think they are.
So, on a scale of 1 to Gary Player, just how fit are Ryder Cup champion, Rafa Cabrera Bello; D+D Real Czech Masters champion, Haydn Porteous; Portugal Masters winner, and captain of the winning team at the Gary Player Invitational in Abu Dhabi, Lucas Bjerregaard; and Emirati pro-golfer Ahmed Almusharakh?
