GARY PLAYER DESIGN OVERSEES REDESIGN WORK AT KIAWAH ISLAND GOLF RESORT

Gary Player Design is leading a series of renovations at the Cougar Point golf course on Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, USA. Jeff Lawrence, senior designer for Gary Player Design, is overseeing design modifications at the course, which was originally designed by Player’s golf course design firm. The focus of the project is to convert fairways, tees and greens from bermuda grass to Paspalum, which is a more sustainable turf variety for this particular type of coastal environment. More design enhancements are also being implemented, including the redesign of three green complexes and the renovation of all the bunkers on the golf course. “We had an opportunity to make meaningful refinements to the bunkers to enhance the playability of the golf course,” Lawrence told GCA. “Most of the bunkers stayed in place with minor shaping adjustments while other bunkers were relocated to provide added strategic value. Awkward handshakes and momentous high-fives – a day spent with Gary Player

This wasn’t quite how I had anticipated meeting Gary Player. The lift doors opened, he was carrying what looked like a bag of washing while I was wrestling with a golf bag, laptop and holdall which meant just getting into the lift and remaining upright was hard enough on its own. I then strangely attempted to pull off a handshake which meant our fingers barely made contact. It was 7am in a hotel in Southport, a mixture of anxiety and over-excitement meant I had been awake for nearly three hours and we were on our way to breakfast. Whilst I struggle to even open my mouth into something resembling a conversation before noon Player, despite the time, doesn’t miss a beat. Over breakfast, we’re sat at different ends of the room but he still engages us whenever he comes to help himself from the buffet, we learn that he always […]

GARY PLAYER: GLOBAL AMBASSADOR OF GOLF

A conversation about living well in his 80’s, golf course design, fitness and selling his African-inspired home in South Carolina.  The U.S. Open, a tournament won by Gary Player in 1965, takes place at Erin Hills, Wisconsin. Player’s 1965 triumph still resonates for its dramatic finish – Player, of South Africa, took the trophy after an 18-hole playoff against Kel Nagle of Australia to become the first foreign-born winner of the U.S. Open since 1927. The win earned him one of golf’s most elusive titles, a Career Grand Slam for claiming top spot in all the major tournaments – The Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA Championship. Player achieved this at age 29, becoming the third player in history join the ultimately exclusive fraternity, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan. Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods later achieved the career Grand Slam.  The winner of 167 tournaments spanning seven decades, Player remains a fixture in the […]
