From the Archives: Gary Player’s 1968 Open Championship Victory

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Gary Player’s Open Championship victory at Carnoustie. As Carnoustie prepares to host yet again next week, we look back at the 1968 Open. Going into the final round Gary Player was strongly in contention, two strokes behind the leader Billy Casper. The weather turned colder and as Player puts it, “the wind was sharp—as sharp as the action.” Player played well throughout the round, but it was his shot on the 14th hole that would win him the tournament. “My drive on 14 cut right down the middle of the fairway in perfect position. OLLIE MCEVOY LOOKS TO CAPTURE ANOTHER IRISH JUNIOR OPEN TITLE

Entries for the 2018 Flogas Irish Junior Open Series are now open for all aspiring golfers aged between five and 18-years-old. The series, which features qualifying events in all four provinces that lead to the final, is one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe. Golfers from across the world travel to compete in the tournament, which this year will culminate at Killymoon Golf Club in Co Tyrone on August 27-28. The Ulster qualifier will take place at Holywood Golf Club, the home of Rory McIlroy, on Monday, July 16. The series is supported by legendary golfer Gary Player, who has helped spread the appeal of the event worldwide and lends his name to the winner’s trophy. JOCKEY CLUB KAU SAI CHAU PUBLIC GOLF COURSE JOINS ASIAN GOLF INDUSTRY FEDERATION

Hong Kong: The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, one of the region’s foremost public golfing establishments, has joined the Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF). Created as a community project between the Hong Kong Government and The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the 54-hole facility was built to meet the growing demand for golf in the region. Cameron Halliday, the club’s General Manager, said: “Since its opening almost 23 years ago, the mission at Kau Sai Chau has been to promote golf to the people of Hong Kong, and the growth of the game locally is testament to the success of the project.” Located along the rugged coastline of Kau Sai Chau within the scenic port shelter area, the three 18-hole courses offer challenging golf in a spectacular setting with sweeping views of Sai Kung and the South China Sea.
