10 OF OUR FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE BLACK KNIGHT

“I played with many golfers who were way better than me, but I won majors and they didn’t. The swing is not the thing. The mind gets you out of a bind. Attitude and determination are more important than your swing.” “Try to get winded 30 minutes a day. Whether it’s climbing stairs in your house, riding an exercise bike or jumping rope, the key is to get at least slightly out of breath for 30 minutes. It’s practically impossible to be badly out of shape if you do this each and every day.” “I can beat most 40-year-olds in the gym at my age. I don’t see myself as old. I look at myself as young. The more you exercise, the better you feel, and the more you can do for your family, business and country.” “Be smart about how you exercise. When other players first saw my weight-training […]

TEAM WOOSNAM WINS, BUT “GOLF AND GIVING” IS THE REAL CHAMPION

Masters champion Ian Woosnam claimed his second Gary Player Invitational victory, but his first in the South African tournament on the global series when he led his team to a two-stroke victory at the Lost City Golf Course at Sun City on Sunday. Woosnam and his team of Bafana Bafana football star Matthew Booth and businessmen Marc Viakovsky and Laurent Girouille made two crucial birdies over the final two holes to take the iconic Baobab Trophy with a score of 34 under par. Tournament host Gary Player and his team of Springbok rugby player Owen Nkumane and businessmen Roger Gauntlett and Alex Maditsi finished second on 32 under par. Woosnam previously won the London GPI tournament on the Gary Player Invitational series in 2015, and said he was delighted to add a victory at Sun City to that list. “It’s brilliant. Sun City is a place I’ve always loved coming […]

There was something entirely apt around the fact that Sunshine Tour professional Keenan Davidse and his team of Sir Kenny Dalglish and two businessmen should lead day one of the Gary Player Invitational presented by Coca-Cola at the Lost City Golf Course on Saturday. Davidse, Dalglish, Andile Thloaele and Gideon du Plessis led the field with 89 points, one ahead of the teams led by Ian Woosnam and the Black Knight himself, Gary Player. But it seemed almost right that the young golfer whom Gary Player supports as part of a talent identification program in South African professional golf should top the leaderboard with his team. Davidse is making his debut in this tournament, and does so as a member of the Gary Player Academy Class, which is the Sunshine Tour’s program to assist historically disadvantaged professionals and build on the work of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB).
