In 2018 Gary Player Design courses around the world hosted several championship events. Most recently the Gary Player Country Club presented the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player, which was played on the award-winning course November 8-11. The Nedbank Golf Challenge is also known as Africa’s Major. Its placement in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai draws golf’s top pros from all over the world as part of the prestigious Rolex Series of playoff events.
The Nedbank Golf Challenge is just the latest in a year in which Gary Player Design courses hosted events on several major professional tours around the world including the PGA TOUR Champions, European Tour, Sunshine Tour, Ladies European Tour, and PGA Tour China.
The challenging Gary Player designed golf course at DLF Golf and Country Club in India hosted both the Hero Indian Open and the Hero Women’s Indian Open this year. In March, The Hero Indian Open, a European Tour event, came to DLF and experienced the unique bunkers and rock quarry, which sets the course apart from anything else in the world. In October the Ladies European Tour event took its turn.
The Ladies European Tour also hosted an event at a Gary Player designed golf course in Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, which hosted the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open in February.
In the United States, the newly opened Mountain Top Course at Big Cedar Lodge (12-hole par-3 course) was site of the Champions Tour Legends of Golf tournament in April. The Mountain Top course was used during the second and third rounds of the PGA Tour Champions event, with Tom Watson commenting that “it’s a very good course that will test most of the clubs in your bag.”
In September, the Gary Player designed Jinji Lake hosted the Suzhou Open, an event on the PGA Tour China in Suzhou. Jinji Lake features 27 holes across three nines – Forest Course, Wetlands Course and Links Course – all designed by Gary Player. The Suzhou Open was a 72-par event played over the Forest and more difficult Links nines for a 7,326-yard layout.
Finally, in December, the Alfred Dunhill Championship will be held at the Gary Player designed Leopard Creek. The event is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the European Tour. Set along the border of Kruger National Park and the Crocodile River, Leopard Creek offers beautiful views and wildlife sightings. The Dunhill Championship returns to Leopard Creek after an off year in which the course underwent improvements. Selwyn Nathan, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour says, “We are delighted to be going back to Leopard Creek for the Alfred Dunhill Championship, which is one of the flagship golf courses and tournaments of South African golf.”
In addition to these professional tour events, each of the Gary Player Invitational global charitable Pro-Am series events is held on a Gary Player Design course. The Gary Player Invitational series is the world’s most prestigious charity golf event series and is played at GlenArbor Golf Club in New York, Wentworth in London, Lost City Golf Course in Sun City, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, and Kau Sai Chau in Hong Kong.
