Golf is going from strength to strength in India – the world’s second most populated country. And with millions of budding golfers ready to take up the sport, the potential for new golf course development is striking.
Thought of as one of India’s most historic and oldest clubs, Delhi Golf Club is taking serious steps to prepare for an influx of avid golfers as the sport grows locally, regionally and globally.
Enter the Gary Player Design firm. After already creating two stunning golf courses in Indi – DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon as well as the spectacular course in Ahmedabad, Glad One – the international golf course architecture firm is now focused on Delhi Golf Club’s complete renovation project.
Construction began in March 2019 and will be completed in the coming months with an opening date goal of late 2019. The club’s ownership saw enormous value in bringing in the most experienced design firm in the world to ensure sustainability, and to reach long term goals for the club. The success of DLF and Glade One speaks volumes as the market seeks new projects and the Black Knight brand is ready, willing and able.
The bulk of the revamp surrounds a complete green complex renovation, fairway bunkering and irrigation systems – all vital to the lifeblood of the course. GPD is also replacing the putting surfaces with mini-verde because it’s proven to be successful in the region, and for its genetic characteristics to produce consistent quality putting surfaces.
“Meaningful design enhancements and quality construction practices will improve visuals aesthetics and strategic value, while keeping the same overall character of its original design,” said Vice President and Senior Designer of Gary Player Design, Jeff Lawrence. “An all-around team effort between ownership and Gary Player Design has proven essential to implement all facets of the project within the aggressive timeframe.”
DLF Golf and Country Club is the current host of the European Tour and Ladies European Tour Indian Open, but a historic site ready for championship competition may entice leadership to create an additional event on the Tour’s Asian swing at Delhi Golf Club.
