THE FUTURE OF THE GARY PLAYER BRAND

Gary Player upholds a legacy not only based on the foundation of his golfing successes but also by the way he has exclusively defined himself over his lifetime. Along with the reputation of being one of the greatest golfers in history, Player is known by many as the Black Knight, Mr. Fitness, the International Ambassador of Golf, and a philanthropist for underprivileged children’s causes.

Throughout his career, Player was commonly seen dressed in all black during tournaments. He explained that as a young golfer his father advised that the best way to succeed was to hold his head up high and stand out from others.

“My dad said don’t be like the sheep that walk in the fields and have their heads by the other’s backside … hold your own head up high. Look around. Be different.” Player said.

Player was inspired by these words of wisdom and cultivated his personal presence. He found inspiration from his favorite movie hero, Paladin from “Have gun will travel” who was always dressed in an all-black outfit during his most honorable moments throughout the film. Through these two influences, Player began to build his persona.

“Black is mysterious, sophisticated, strong and elegant. You can wear black at any age. You can wear black for any occasion. You can wear black at any time,” Player said.

Dressed in all black, charging from behind to victories all around the world, being chivalrous, soon the media had dubbed Player, the Black Knight of the fairways.

From there the nickname stuck. Player will always uphold the legacy of a gentleman dressed in black as he nobly overcomes various battles on and off the golf course. He holds qualities of perseverance, hard work, and unwavering confidence. All of which can be felt through the image and brand of the Black Knight.

While today Player no longer competes in many tournaments, he continues to uphold the diet, fitness and healthful lifestyle of an athlete. Being active, eating well and keeping his mind sharp are all the areas he credits his long life and minimized health obstacles to. As he continues to advocate for improved health and exercise among all people, he contributes to a long-lasting legacy through and provides a positive example for aspiring golfers of all ages and around the world.

Marc Player, the CEO of the Gary Player Group, has tirelessly worked over the last three decades to build a brand around this mantra which he believes will transcend past his father’s lifetime.
