Gary Player Design is pleased to announce the opening of Mogador the first of two courses built in the city of Essaouria in Morocco. The design team paid particular attention to the natural beauty of the Moroccan landscape routing the course through existing trees and incorporating dramatic elevation changes and the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The development is one of the most ambitious projects in Morocco and includes luxury residences/villas, a 5-star Sofitel Hotel, fine dining and a stunning clubhouse. Members and visitors alike will have a truly Moroccan experience while playing a championship 18-hole Gary Player Signature designed golf course.
Moroccans are some of the warmest and most welcoming people in the world and Essourai is a perfect example of their hospitability. Essourai, literally translated in Moroccan Arabic means ‘picture’, is located in the southwest region of Morocco and is considered to be the most relaxed small city in the country.
Its tranquil atmosphere and charm has drawn the likes of Orson Wells, who choose that location for the filming of scenes from his classic film Othello. Jimi Hendrix attributed his inspiration for the song “Castles Made of Sand” to the experience he had while there. Morocco is also known as one of the most popular wind surfing destinations in the world. Some say that the source of the tranquil environment comes from the consistent Mistral winds blowing down from the Atlas Mountains while others claim that it’s the mystical aura that surrounds Essourai or the hippie-like environment and the openness and friendliness of its inhabitants. Whatever the reason, Essourai is a wonderful place to visit and relax in the lap of luxury.
If you want a faster paced experience, Marrakesh is the place to go. Marrakesh is the epicenter of Moroccan tourism and an energetic and exotic city. The highlight of any trip to Marrakesh is a visit to one of the numerous Souqs found throughout the city. Souqs, the city’s commercial centers, are famous for the sheer variety and quality of goods available and the aggressive
sales tactics of the vendors. Simply, the Souqs are a blast.
After your hectic shopping experience, retreat to the riad AnaYela, one of the finest Marrakchi riads. The owners took their time restoring this 300-year-old palace focusing on authenticity and creating a true Marrakchi experience - over 100 local artisans helped to refurbish it, using every traditional technique from silver-beating to wood carving, and working by candle-light throughout.
The other hot spots not to be forgotten about are Casablanca and Tangier. Both are cosmopolitan cities with vibrant night life, rich cultural history, interesting architecture and residents ready to greet you with open hearts. Morocco is surely a destination that should be on everyone’s travel schedule.
