The Black Knight Brings the Prestigious Gary Player Invitational to Lothian, Scotland

Fifty years after winning his first ‘Major’ at Muirfield, Gary Player will stage his star-studded invitational tournament next door to the scene of that Open Championship victory.
The Gary Player Invitational (GPI), reckoned to be the UK’s leading pro-celebrity charity event, is being held at Archerfield Links next month, the tournament having been moved from its normal home, Wentworth, specifically to mark the South African’s success in East Lothian back in 1959.
Player will host an exclusive sponsor’s day at Muirfield on Monday, July 6, with the pro-celebrity event taking place the next day at Archerfield Links, followed by a gala dinner in Archerfield House.
Former football stars Trevor Steven, Mark Bright and Russell Osman are among the celebrities confirmed so far, as are former world snooker champion Dennis Taylor, DJ Spoony, top jockey Mick Fitzgerald, former tennis player Jeremy Bates, Sky golf presenter Di Stewart and ex-rugby stars Gavin Hastings and Ieuan Evans.
Bernard Gallacher, the former Ryder Cup captain, was among the professionals who took part in last year’s event and two European Senior Tour players, DJ Russell and Andrew Murray, as well as Scottish women’s star Lynn Kenny, are among those taking part this time around.
Player hosts similar pro-celebrity events in America, South Africa and China each year, having established The Player Foundation more than 25 years ago in order to provide quality education, nutrition, medical care and extra-curricular activities to the less fortunate children living in rural areas of South Africa.
Today, through the Gary Player Invitational series of charity events, the foundation has expanded its efforts to support underprivileged children and HIV orphans through health and education initiatives globally.
Since 1983, a sum of more than $30 million has been raised and bosses at Archerfield Links are delighted that Player has chosen the first-class East Lothian venue to host his European tournament this year.
A handful of team spots are still available for the Gary Player Invitational charity event. Contact WSM Sponsorship at + 44 20 7590 7510 for details.
