Poland Makes Its Mark As A Top Golf Destination

Poland, like many other countries where the popularity of golf is in its early stages, had little infrastructure in place to allow for the growth of the game. Most considered golf to be an elitist sport and the lack of public and private courses made it quite difficult play. As the pall of communism faded and Poland joined the EU the allure of golf started to slowly take hold. New courses, both private and public, were built and the PGA Polska was established to help promote the sport both at home and abroad.
The commitment to popularizing the game and establishing Poland as a world class golf destination was recently highlighted with the selection of the Gary Player designed Modry Las Golf Club as one of Europe’s Top 100 Courses by Golf World Magazine and receiving the number one Best Course in Poland. This is a harbinger of great things to come for the Polish golf industry as the country begins to embrace the sport in greater numbers, strives to develop a youth golf program that can produce top flight competitors and continues to secure European PGA Tour events (Poland hosted three events in 2009).
Poland is a wonderful country that, despite its rush to embrace technology and become a modern society akin to its EU neighbors, has retained much of its rustic culture. Walking through Warsaw you will find cyber cafes, night clubs and fine dining, but you will also run across peasant women selling flowers and produce in the streets.
If you take a drive across the country’s northern region you will encounter a string of 14th-century Gothic castles the most stunning being in Malbork where the last remnants of the once powerful Teutonic Knights stands. If you prefer to head south do not miss the crystal clear waters of the Great Masurian Lakes where water sports are king, or the long, sandy beaches of the Baltic coast.
The dichotomy between the old and new, the beautiful countryside, forests, lakes, and mountains make Poland a marvelous adventure for any traveler.
