Player’s Charity Events Continue to Aid Needy Children in all Four Corners of the Globe
Aug 15, 2006 | Filed Under: The Player Foundation
The Gary Player Invitational was recently held at the Wentworth Club near London. Raising some $250,000 for The Player Foundation, the event featured some of the biggest celebrity names in the UK like Michael Stich, Ian Wright, Jamie Redknapp, Jerry Guscott, Alec Stewart and Vernon Kay, as well as strong female celebrity support from Gabby Logan, Diana Stewart and Michelle Heaton. They joined Gary Player as well as European Tour professionals Justin Rose and Paul Casey to help make a difference in needy children’s lives around the world. The event, presented by Coca-Cola and sponsored by Wentworth Club, Davenport Lyons, Callaway Golf, Pringle of Scotland and Boschendal was the subject of much media attention, including a half-hour television program to air later this month on Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the inaugural Gary Player Classic to be hosted in China next month, followed by the Nelson Mandela Invitational in South Africa this November. The Nelson Mandela Invitational presented by Coca-Cola will be hosted by Gary Player the weekend of November 25th and 26th at Arabella Golf Club near Cape Town. Arabella has experienced good winter rains so far, which should ensure that the course is once again in top condition for the professional golfers, businessmen and celebrities who come together to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Gary Player Foundation.
This will be the seventh playing of the Nelson Mandela Invitational, which has already raised more than $2 million for the charities that focus on helping needy children both in South Africa and around the world. The field will be announced in the next couple of months, but if past events are anything to go by, some of the biggest names in golf, as well as other sports and entertainment, will be joining Gary Player in having great fun for a serious cause.
