Player & Charles: Legends Win at Legends
Gary Player & Bob Charles Claimed Victory Today in the Legends of Golf Demaret Division…
The Champions Tour’s 32nd Annual Legends of Golf Tournament kicked off this week at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa on Hutchinson Island, Savannah, Georgia. After a two-day competition with a field of 16 pairings, Gary Player & Bob Charles won the Demaret Division by one stroke, finishing at 18 under par.
Charles’ 3-foot birdie putt at No. 17 proved to be the difference, but Player needed to sink a 4-footer for par at No. 18 to clinch the title for the pair.
Charles and Player started the day with a two-stroke lead over Powell/Geiberger (defending champions) and Don Bies/Tom Shaw, but had to hold off a late charge by Team Powell/Geiberger who closed within one stroke after birdies on four of the first five holes. However, they could get no closer as Bob Charles matched their birdie on Hole 17.
“It was a thrilling finish out there,” said Gary Player. “We ham-and-egged it pretty well.”
Added Charles, who became the first New Zealander and first left-hander to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008: “It’s a pleasure playing with Gary and I think we’re a good combination. We’ve played together several times before, but it’s still nice to be able to compete at age 73.”
Player and Charles met 53 years ago at the Ampol Tournament in Melbourne, Australia. Player, from South Africa, had been a professional for only three years. Charles, from New Zealand, was still an amateur. They quickly became friends and drew closer when Charles married Player’s wife Vivienne’s best friend, Verity.
