Hunter Mahan Wins The Gary Player Cup

AKRON, Ohio – Hunter Mahan shot an impressive 6-under 64 on Sunday to take home his first World Golf Championship title at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.  This marked the second win this year for Mahan and moved him to number 12 in the world rankings.  This also marked Mahan’s first time taking home the Gary Player Cup, the trophy awarded to the winner of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

With his win at the Bridgestone Mahan secured his spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, one of the goals he set out to accomplish at the beginning of the 2010 season.  “This is one of the bigger tournaments we play all year,” Mahan said. “And it’s definitely the best win of my career.”

Mahan was able to overcome a 4-shot deficit by holing five birdies on the front nine and playing nearly error free golf on the back to hold off Ryan Palmer by 2 shots.  The only hiccup for Mahan was the difficult par 5 16th where he managed to put his second shot into a flower bed long and right of the green.  Fortunately he was given relief and was able to drop in the walkway to the 17th tee.  Mahan then played a safe chip shot through the green and onto the fairway.  A beautiful up and down saved par and secured his victory.

Even with Tiger Woods’ struggles all weekend and Phil Mickelson’s 78 on Sunday Mahan’s performance was outstanding.  His 64 was the lowest final round by a winner since the Bridgestone Invitational became a WGC event in 1999 and he bested an impressive field of some of the world’s top golfers showing the mental toughness needed to win tournaments of this caliber.
