Gary Player Championship Course Welcomes the Inaugural Africa Open
Feb 08, 2008 | Filed Under: Events and Tournaments
After an absence of nearly ten years, the Sunshine Tour returns to the Fish River Sun Country Club, taking professional golf back to the Eastern Cape coastline for the inaugural Africa Open. The Africa Open will be played at the splendid Gary Player-designed championship course at the Fish River Sun near Port Alfred from February 7 – 10, where southern Africa’s best players will join the cream of the Sunshine Tour and shoot for a prize purse of R1.2 million.
The 18-hole championship layout, with Bent grass greens and Kikuyu fairways, incorporates a number of distinctive challenges presented by the natural landscape on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Gary Player went to extraordinary lengths during the design period of this layout to ensure that the outstanding indigenous features of the area were not compromised, especially the Euphorbia trees found on several of the holes. At nearly 6,300m this course is definitely no pushover, especially when one is playing into the prevailing Westerly wind.
