Gary to Play in His 48th Masters

Player became the first international man to win the Master in 1961.

Gary Player, who first played the greens of Augusta National in 1957, will make his 48th competitive appearance at the Masters this year.  As a three-time champion of this Major Championship, Player is automatically pre-qualified for the tournament, as are all previous winners.  The Masters is the only major tournament that offers lifelong exemption to past champions, which is something truly unique.  Where else have spectators had the opportunity to watch the modern ‘Big Five’ and the legendary ‘Big Three’ walk the fairways in the same round?

Gary Player is nearing his 50th anniversary at Augusta which hasn’t quite sunk in yet for the Black Knight.  “It feels like yesterday that I received a letter from Chairman Clifford Roberts inviting me to play in this prestigious tournament, and might I add, it was a dream come true for a young golfer like me living all the way in South Africa,” he says.

For Gary Player there are a lot of little things that make the trip to Augusta very special each year - the organization of the tournament, for one.  Player has no qualms in saying that the Masters is the best-run tournament in golf.  Also, the beauty of Augusta National, the feeling of having earned three green jackets and the southern hospitality are quite simply second to none.

While a lot of things have changed over the years, like the length of the course and modern day equipment coming into play, Gary Player still believes that, although power is a huge plus at Augusta, having a hot putter and a deft touch around the greens is a must in order to win.

Gary Player is one of only seven players to win three or more Masters Championships and he also holds the record for the most consecutive cuts made with 23.  He was runner up twice (1962 & 1965) and has also finished in the top 10 fifteen times.
