Gary Player Design Portfolio Reaches Central America

The site of the new Gary Player course at Los Micos.

It was recently announced that the Tourism Department of the Honduran Government has chosen Gary Player to design its 27-hole golf course, which will be developed as part of the Los Micos Resort. Los Micos Beach and Resorts is a multi-faceted project in the pristine Tela Bay area along the north coast of the country. Only recently has the development of destination resorts in Central America included golf courses, and more significantly, the new Gary Player designed signature course on the Micos Lagoon will be the first world class golf course in Honduras.

This stunning coastal area has been recognized by the national government as a highly potential means of generating tourism dollars and will undoubtedly be a magnet for visitors from the nearby United States, Europe and other parts of the world. Generating employment for the local community is also on the economic agenda, of which Los Micos will provide thousands of opportunities both during the construction phase and once the resort is operational.

Los Micos, meaning “the monkeys,” has a large presence of wildlife and over 350 species of birds, which will certainly become a consideration during the golf course construction phase. Gary Player has always been an advocate of not disturbing the natural environment, which will pose an attractive challenge for Player and his design team. In addition to the golf course development, this master-planned facility will include several exclusive and branded beach hotels, a residential area along one of the nine holes, a marina, as well as water sports and boating opportunities.

The Honduran Government, having watched the success of resort properties in the Caribbean over the years, predicts a major tourism boom within this striking region of their own country. Given the global profile of Gary Player and his ability to work with diverse natural conditions, Gary Player Design is a natural choice for the job. As Player often says, “I’ve worked all my life to take golf to new places throughout the world, whether it’s playing the game or designing courses, and for that reason, I am thrilled to be a part of this project in Honduras.”

Routing plans are under way and construction is expected to begin early next year.

Greetings from Tela, Honduras, on the western caribbean!
Yes, this project still is in the works… after 30+ years after inception, we have a road, a developer/investor group and some ground breaking ceremonies… We all know that this area of the country posses an inevitable tourism devotion; however, are large Mega projects the best option..? A good number of locals believe mid size hotels is a better opportunity for the area and the country. As hotel GM and Consultant for many years in the region, I have learned from other caribbean destinations and from beach resort operations in central america, that small hotels, owned by local investors, helps wealth distribution among natives better than large properties owned by a few… also, enviroment impact is lesser and, the most important factor, from my end, small and mid size hotels are better equipped and more prepared to deliver true Service than large Resorts were guest identity is his/her “room number"… Worldwide the hospitality industry is going for Micro marketing and Honduras could very well jump into that wagon fomenting the one to one Service you found in small hotels… Best Regards, Emilio Vargas, http://www.emiliovargas.com http://www.hotelconsult.org
