Daniel Nisbet shot a 64 to win this year's Gary Player Classic (16 and under division).
16-year-old Daniel Nisbet fired a 64 (-8) at the Pacific Golf Club to win the Gary Player Classic, an annual event sponsored by Gary Player and put on by the Queensland Golf Union. It was a phenomenal finish by the Australian and Queensland Junior Team member, who is also the current Queensland Junior Champion.
Nisbet finished at 273 (-15) with rounds of 72.764.73.64 and won by nine shots from fellow Australian representative Tarquin MacManus (Pacific).
Kevin Lee (Oxley) overtook 54 hole leader Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) with a quality display shooting 66 (-6) today to win the 18 - 20 Years division. Lee’s round was somewhat overshadowed by Nisbet’s 64, but was a fantastic round given the circumstances. Lee finished on 277 (-11) with rounds of 67.73.71.66, two shots ahead of Beaufils 279 (-9).
In a fantastic finish to the youngest age division (15 Years and Under), Chris Wood (Wynnum) defeated Jackson Park (Nudgee) on the first hole of a sudden death playoff, after both players finished on 298 (+10). Wood managed to sink a putt of approximately 40 feet on the par 5, 1st hole to take the title, and his biggest win to date. Wood’s round of 73 (+1) today was an excellent round and at just 15 years of age, has shown great potential.
The 2006 Gary Player Classic was again a fantastic event this week, attracting a number of interstate and international players, in addition to the local players who are amongst the best in Australia. The Gary Player Classic has become recognized throughout Australia as one of the leading Championship’s for young golfers and its status as an Australian Junior Order of Merit event, only strengthens that reputation.
Daniel Nisbet will take away the 10 AJOM points from this event which will give him the lead with only a couple of events remaining. On offer for the winner is an invitation to contest the MFS Australian Open at Royal Sydney in November.
The Queensland Golf Union would like to convey its thanks to Mr. Gary Player and Adina Watches for the continued support of this event, as well as the fantastic Pacific Golf Club which has become the home of the Gary Player Classic.
