Gary Player Announced as New Special Playing Editor for Golf Digest

Dec 1, 2008 | Filed Under: General News

Gary Player has joined forces with South Africa’s leading golf magazine, Golf Digest, to bring golf enthusiasts an even better read. This powerful relationship was confirmed today at the Gary Player Invitational hosted at Fancourt when Player was announced as a Golf Digest Exclusive Playing Editor.

Commented the Black Knight from the Gary Player Invitational at Fanourt in South Africa: “My memory takes me back many years with Golf Digest, so I’m very proud to now be listed on the masthead on the magazine.  I look forward to contributing on many subjects from travel, to technology, to golf course design & many other interesting aspects of this global game.

“I’ve known Stuart McLean for many years and I’m thrilled to be working closely with him again.”

One of the most successful golfers in the history of the game, with nine major championship victories, Player was part of “The Big Three” with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer who dominated the game in the 1960s and early 1970s. Known as the Black Knight, Player is one of only five golfers to have completed the Grand Slam of winning all four of the majors.

Now 73, but still fitter and more energetic than men half his age, Player has been a tireless international ambassador for the game. He has also established himself as one of the best golf course architects in the game, with more than 300 design projects around the world.

Player joins some distinguished names who are already Golf Digest Playing Editors, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson and Nick Price.

Golf Digest is the world’s and South Africa’s biggest selling golf publication and the respected authority on the game. Bringing together two of the biggest brands in golf is a perfect combination.

“Gary Player is a rare institution in the golfing world, a man who has created headlines for more than 50 years, and whose voice and opinions are as respected today as they have ever been,” said Golf Digest Editor Stuart McLean. “We’re very proud to have Gary as part of our team, and look forward to a relationship that will enhance our publication.”
