Full Steam Ahead at Blair Atholl
Sep 01, 2006 | Filed Under: Golf Course Design
Gary Player's latest Signature Course, Blair Atholl, will measure over 7,800 yards, making it the longest in Africa.
The development of Gary Player’s former Johannesburg home, Blair Atholl, into a low-density residential golf estate with a Gary Player Signature design golf course is in full swing and well on schedule. According to Robbie Wray of developers Wraypex, eight holes have been seeded, another six are ready for seeding and the remaining four are undergoing final shaping and will be ready for planting this month. This means that with the spring growing season just around the corner, the course should be ready at the beginning of 2007 as planned.
The estate is abuzz with construction with some 15 homes at various stages of construction, while the clubhouse will be completed by the end of November. On the 1,600 acres that make up the extent of the estate, there will be just 300 homesites. Each site is at least one acre in size with at least half an acre between sites. The course promises to be one of Gary Player’s great masterpieces, and will end up being uniquely African with sweeping vistas of the surrounding natural bush, while more than 28,000 mature indigenous trees are being planted on the course - many of which are indigenous olive trees. It can best be described as ‘oversized’ with everything being done on a large scale. From the tips, the course will measure well over 7,800 yards, making it the longest in Africa, while the greens will be at least double the size of comparable courses.
There are still a small number of homesites available. Visit http://www.blairatholl.co.za to find out how you could be a part of one of Africa’s most exclusive golf communities.
