Each year Coca-Cola recognizes one of its business units as the top performing unit in the world by awarding the company’s highest honor, the Woodruff Cup. The 2009 prize went to the China Business Unit and President, Doug Jackson.
Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent presented the award to Jackson, who shared the award with Martin Jansen, CEO of CCCIL, Coke’s Company-owned bottler in China, and Glenn Jordan, President of the Pacific Group.
Kent said this is the first year he could remember when the finalists have represented all operating groups. The qualifiers proved that growth is possible even in the face of negative GDP, he added, also crediting them with “stealing a page from Robert Woodruff’s playbook” by leading with character and courage during times of economic turmoil. Kent also recognized the India & Southwest Asia Business Unit as this year’s runner-up.
“I proudly accept this honor on behalf of the extraordinary men and women of the China Business Unit, who, along with the entire Pacific Group and our bottling partners at BIG/CCCIL, Swire, COFCO and Zhuhai, delivered an exceptional effort in 2009,” Jackson said.
Coca-Cola has been a long time supporter of the Gary Player Invitational Series of global charity golf tournaments which raise funds to provide quality education for underprivileged children and strengthen impoverished communities plagued by disease and crime. In 2009, the GPI China event, co-hosted by Gary Player, Doug Jackson and international movie star and philanthropist Jackie Chan raised more than R 8 million to help AIDS affected orphans in China and children in need across the world.
Mr. Player, The Player Group, and Black Knight International extend their gratitude for all of Coca-Cola’s support and congratulate Doug Jackson and the entire China Business Unit for winning this prestigious award.
