Became the first non-American to win the U.S. Open and the third golfer to win all four major championships (the Grand Slam) and therefore joined Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan with this distinction (Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods joined them later). He won four titles during a span of seven years, and was only 30 years old. Player was the winner in an eighteen-hole playoff (71) against Kel Nagle (74) with a 282 total. Player gave his prize money to two charitable organizations—The Cancer Association (his mother died of cancer when he was eight years old) and the Junior Golf Association.
