It took 93 holes for Gary to secure his 13th South African Open title. At the age of 47, Gary matched the others stroke by stroke for five days, finally claiming the title with a birdie on the 21st playoff hole. With a tie after 72 holes with record breaking 272 totals and 16-under-par, Gary gained three strokes and finally claimed his title from John Bland and Warren Humphreys. Player and Bland shot 70, Humphreys 72 in an 18-hole playoff with Player ultimately defeating Bland on the third sudden death hole. This was the longest playoff in the history of the South African Open. Player later said that he was sorry that John Bland had to lose, because he had never won a South African Open.
