Gary had not competed in the USA since the previous season, and in this—his first start in America—he won the tournmament, beating a playoff jinx that had given him nine losses in ten tries with Hal Underwood as the victim. Both made pars on the first extra hole, but when Underwood made a bogey from a trap on the second, Player won with a par. This was his second win in a playoff in the United States. The other was in the 1965 U.S. Open over Ken Nagel.
