In July 1997, Gary Player won the British Senior Open in a sudden death playoff at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Gary said, “It was my ambition to win nine majors on the Senior’s Tour to match my nine majors on the Regular Tour.” Gary rolled in a 15-foot putt at the second extra hole to edge countryman John Bland and win his third British Senior Open title. After shooting a 4-under 68 and describing it as one of his best two rounds as a senior, he saw off the challenge of Bland at the 18th and collected the winner’s check of R58,330.  Gary’s final score was 68-70-72-68.
