LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE

You can imagine my surprise and bemusement when reading the recent article by John Strege from Golf Digest in which Robert Trent Jones Jr. yet again raised my comments about the diabolical condition of Chambers Bay a few years ago during the U.S. Open. The comments made two years ago about Chambers Bay no doubt were justified. I certainly was not the only one who spoke out about the design or condition of the course. Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Billy Horschel, Sergio Garcia, and many others expressed their distaste for the course and how it was presented. It was no secret the players and fans were unhappy with the setup, condition and inability to walk the course as a spectator. I wasn’t at Chambers Bay that year randomly. I was invited to celebrate the anniversary of my career Grand Slam victory, which I completed 50 years earlier at the U.S. […]

OPEN LEGEND VISITS SOUTHPORT SCHOOL

Three-time Champion Golfer of the Year Gary Player was reunited with the famous Claret Jug trophy today on a surprise visit to St Philip’s Church of England Primary School in Southport. Fifteen-hundred schoolchildren from five schools in Sefton will come face-to-face with one of the most iconic trophies in sport this week and for the pupils of St Philip’s, the experience included the opportunity to talk with an Open Champion. Gary Player practised harder, travelled farther and was more meticulous about his diet and fitness than any other golfer of his generation. He started playing golf aged 14 and turned professional three years later, embarking on a career that required him to spend many weeks a year away from his home in South Africa. His enthusiasm for his sport led him to win over 160 tournaments over six decades. He has also played in The Open a record 46 times […]

ROBERT TRENT JONES JR. CONTINUES TO DISRESPECT THE USGA, GOLF AND GARY PLAYER

As we approach the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills, the aftermath of most players’, but especially Gary Player’s, criticism of Chambers Bay, the 2015 venue, has now unfortunately been raised yet again by Robert Trent Jones Jr. nearly two years later. Following an interview by John Strenge with Jones Jr., Golf Digest published an article in which the course designer once again called out the Black Knight for saying what seemed to be on every golfer’s, fan’s, and journalists’ mind when Chambers Bay hosted the U.S. Open – the high standard expected for a USGA Major Championship course was simply not up to par. The Black Knight was in attendance on the USA’s West Coast for the region’s first U.S. Open, walked the course, and saw how it played with his own eyes. Skepticism of holding the iconic event at an unproven and untraditional venue was warranted as a links style […]
