17 YEARS AFTER FIRST MASTERS, GARY PLAYER WINS A THIRD

Today: 40th anniversary – Gary Player wins third Masters It was hot, with summer-like temperatures, in Augusta on April 9, 1978. However, nothing was hotter than Gary Player that day. The South African stood in 10th place entering the final round, seven strokes behind leader Hubert Green who was 10-under par. At 42, and 17 years after his first Masters victory, he was an afterthought in the golf tournament. However, Player shot a final-round course-record 64, an 8-under par round that included nine birdies and one bogey, to overcome the deficit and finish at 11-under par. He posted a 30 on the back nine with six birdies, with only pars on Nos. 11, 14 and 17. GOLF LEGEND GARY PLAYER SPEAKS TO SPARTANBURG DAY STUDENTS

Gabriel Player’s grandfather was the main attraction at Spartanburg Day School on Friday morning. The fourth-grader and his brothers, Sebastian and Damien, joined the rest of the student body in welcoming golf legend Gary Player to the school. Player, a nine-time major winner on the PGA tour, nine-time Senior Tour major winner and one of only five players to win a Career Grand Slam, operates the Player Foundation, which focuses on education for underprivileged children throughout the world. He was at Spartanburg Day on Friday to share part of his message with the students. He had a lot of fun along the way.
