HAS TECHNOLOGY MADE IT TOO EASY TO BREAK COURSE RECORDS?

Ross Fisher is still buzzing five days after the round that put him into the record books and reopened a can of worms. Depending on your stance, the Englishman’s 61 at St Andrews was a mesmerising feat of parameter- pushing or proof that golf’s grand old courses are now pushovers. The Royal & Ancient and USGA, the sport’s ruling bodies, published a report in February that suggested big-hitting is not bludgeoning history to death. Fisher says that the reaction to his course record during the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship has been “awesome”, but Gary Player, the nine-times major winner, fears for the future and called the round “a wake-up call”. While most PGA and LPGA participants effortlessly navigated their way around the Gary Player designed GlenArbor Golf Club at the Berenberg Gary Player Invitational on October 2, some found a new level of competition when the Black Knight challenged participants to the event’s first-ever Tongue Twister Challenge. Joining the 18-time Major Champion earlier this week in Bedford Hills, NY for a star-studded session of golf was Presidents Cup player Branden Grace, eight-time Major winner Tom Watson; six-time Major winner Lee Trevino; Masters Champions Bernhard Langer, Mark O’Meara, Trevor Immelman, Larry Mize and Mike Weir; and 19-time winner on the LPGA Tour, Cristie Kerr.
