BACK TO BACK VICTORIES IN MINNESOTA FOR “TEAM GREATEST EVER”

A compilation of legends, dubbed “Team Greatest Ever” was victorious once again at the 3M Greats of Golf at TPC Twin Cities. Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Jerry Pate teamed to shoot 12-under-par on the final 10 holes Saturday to win the Greats of Golf Challenge in Blaine, Minnesota, located near Minneapolis. The event was incorporated as part of the third round of Saturday’s PGA Tour Champions stop, the 3M Championship, which is one of the most popular tournaments on the Champions Tour. “It’s a marvelous event that shows we can still play very, very well,” said Grand Slam champion, Gary Player. “Having Jerry join our team the last two years has been fantastic as he can obviously hit the ball a long way. And Jack, Lee and myself showed we can hits shots and still make some putts when it really counts.” The four legends combined to […]

GRASS IS LOOKING GREENER FOR SOWETO COUNTRY CLUB

By the end of September, the passionate golfers of Soweto should have an excellent idea of the incredible quality of their new golf course at Soweto Country Club. Soweto Country Club’s transformation will almost be complete when the final kikuyu grass is laid by mid-September. According to Phil Jacobs, who is leading the golf course construction team of Southern Turf Management (STM) on behalf of the original designer Gary Player, the project that has captured the imagination of the South African golf community and also secured valuable international support is well on schedule. This seeding with bent grass will start in August,” said Jacobs. “All the tees are ready for kikuyu grass planting, which we plan to begin in the second […]

50 YEARS AFTER WINING THE OPEN, GARY PLAYER HOLDS COURT

For as unpredictable as Carnoustie could play this week at the British Open, Gary Player could be found at the other end of the spectrum Wednesday, doing sit-ups and talking fitness, nutrition and, yes, a little golf. Player, who won one of his three Claret Jugs at Carnoustie in 1968, celebrated his 50th anniversary of that victory by holding court for more than a half hour in Carnoustie’s interview room. Here are the highlights: Asked if he ever imagined himself being back at Carnoustie 50 years after his win, Player instantly cracked a joke undoubtedly aimed at his less-fit peers: “I certainly did. Being close to 83, you’re lucky to be alive. All my golfing friends are dead now. I’ve got to find new four-balls to play with. No, I certainly didn’t think I’d be back here. I was optimistic, but I really didn’t think I’d be back here to […]
